As recently as five weeks ago, he looked like a lock. Kasey Kahne stood seventh in Sprint Cup points after finishing in the same position at the Aug. 3 event at Pocono Raceway, and liked his chances of climbing a little higher before the Chase. Little did he know it would be the last time he would see the top 10 until last Sunday night’s race at Auto Club Speedway in Southern California — which might have been too little, too late.

At 12 he was racing in the World Karting Association. He earned championships and awards, and moved on. His Truck Series debut was in 2002, and he has run 102 races in the Nationwide Series spread across six years. His only full-time season was 2006.

While testing at The Milwaukee Mile Wednesday for Penske Racing, David Stremme couldn’t help but crack a smile as he looked across track and found the No. 40 Dodge.

Without a Sprint Cup car to drive, Dario Franchitti found himself on familiar ground last weekend — at the IndyCar Series event in Detroit, but only as a spectator. It was there, amid all those open-wheeled cars he was once synonymous with, where he ultimately made the decision to leave NASCAR and return to the circuit where he was champion in 2007.
